Obesity: A Growing Global Concern

Obesity is a phenomenon that is increasing worldwide. A person is considered obese when an abnormal amount of fat accumulates in the body relative to their age. According to numerous international sources, including the press and the internet, obesity is linked to serious health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain types of cancer—especially breast cancer in women—osteoarthritis, and asthma.

The primary causes of obesity are excessive food intake with high-calorie consumption and a sedentary lifestyle. Only by following a systematic healthy diet, controlling the quantity of food and daily calorie intake, and exercising regularly can one reduce the risks associated with obesity.

An obese person should aim to lose weight gradually, not abruptly, and remain consistent in maintaining a proper diet and exercise routine.

A survey conducted by Harvard, published online, warns that obesity could become the leading cause of cancer within the next decade, surpassing smoking in its dangers.

Extensive research worldwide has shown that Greece is among the countries with significant obesity problems.

Visiting a nutritionist is highly recommended. A nutritionist can advise you on how to lose excess weight gradually and safely. If you have health issues, consult your doctor before considering surgical options such as the intragastric balloon—a device placed inside the stomach that occupies space and reduces hunger, helping you eat less.
